Felix/ZAMA
The Ancient Battles game system (17 different battle scenarios spread over 3 boxed sets and 2 magazine game issues) is a tactical simulation of ancient battles. Each game in the system represents one of the great combats of the ancient world. The playing pieces represent the actual units that participated in the battles. The map represents the terrain over which those units fought. Zama (202 BC) was the final, decisive battle of the Second Punic War (219-201). It was the culmination of seventeen years of continuous warfare between the two great western Mediterranean powers, Rome and Carthage. It not only settled the war, but put Rome firmly on the road to world domination.
Operation Felix was the code name for the proposed assault on the British stronghold and strategic port of Gibraltar, gateway to the Western Mediterranean. Historically, the Germans failed to seize the strategic initiative they had achieved with the rapid capitulation of France and instead turned their attention eastward after the aerial Battle of Britain ended in failure. Here it is assumed that Operation SEALION proceeded forward rapidly. To maximize the chances for a successful invasion of Britain, the Axis would drive the British from the Mediterranean Theater of Operations while strangling the Isles with an air and naval blockade. Scenarios cover a July 1940 attack, the more probable December 1940 invasion, and a Spanish assault (with a little help from German allies). Optional rules for SS reinforcements and greater German amphibious capacity.
